This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for February 13, covering the period
February 13 - 19, 2009.  

 

The birding highlights of the week include a NORTHERN PINTAIL seen 2/13 on
Grand Isle, the continued presence of the NORTHERN HAWK OWL in Eden, last
reported on 2/15 and a CHIPPING SPARROW on Grand Isle, 2/13.

 

Four juvenile ICELAND GULLS were seen in Town Farm Bay in Charlotte on 2/15
along with one GLAUCOUS GULL.  A GLAUCOUS GULL was also spotted at the
Burlington Intervale on 2/15.

 

The South Burlington SNOWY OWL was last sighted near the Cider Mill
development off Dorset Street, on Crispin Drive, on 2/17.

 

A NORTHERN FLICKER was seen in Manchester on 2/14.  

 

BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were observed in Bennington (40 on 2/14), Saxton's River
(100) on 2/16, Shelburne (30+ on 2/13, 20 on 2/15), Danby (16 on 2/15) and
Essex Junction (107 on 2/15) this week. Eleven CEDAR WAXWINGS were spotted
in Essex Junction on 2/15 and 2 in Saxton's River on 2/16.

 

A CHIPPING SPARROW was seen on Grand Isle on 2/13.

 

PINE GROSBEAKS were reported from Orleans (3) and Woodstock (1) and EVENING
GROSBEAKS from Lyndonville (15) this week.

 

The following sightings of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS were reported:  2/17 -
Woodstock (1), Rochester (1); 2/19 - a female and singing male in
Middletown Springs, Danby (12 males).

 

WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were sighted in Nulhegan Basin, Montpelier,
Moretown, Burlington, Lyndonville, South Strafford, Jericho and Underhill
this week.

 

COMMON REDPOLL (+ 1 HOARY in Waitsfield) and PINE SISKIN sightings were
numerous throughout the state this week.
