En route back from an errand in WRJ, I stopped at the Wilder Dam at 4:45
pm to observe the influx of roosting waterfowl that congregate there on
an apparently nightly basis this time of year. By the time I left at
5:05 pm, birds seemed to have stopped arriving, and I counted 86
individuals, though lighting was poor, and I could have missed a few.
These included 2 male Green-winged Teal (a surprise), 29 Hooded
Mergansers, and 55 Common Mergansers.
I was unable to locate a Bald Eagle and wonder where they roost at
night. Does anyone know? I remember back in the late 1980s when the
Wilder Dam adult roosted regularly on the wooded hillside west of I-91
across from the bus terminal, just north of the southbound WRJ exit.
