This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for April 7, 2008 covering the period
March 31-April 6, 2008.

 

Highlights of the week included a number of first sightings and sounds of
the season, including a RUFFED GROUSE drumming in Brandon on 4/6; a
BONAPARTE'S GULL at Herrick's Cove on 4/2; a WILSON'S SNIPE in Grand Isle on
4/5 and 4/6 and 3 in Salisbury on 4/6; TREE SWALLOWS throughout the state;
two BARN SWALLOWS at Lake Bomoseen on 4/3; a HOUSE WREN in Woodside Park in
Essex on 4/6; CHIPPING SPARROWS in Rupert (4/4), Brattleboro (4/5) and Grand
Isle (4/6); a FIELD SPARROW at Red Rocks Park in Burlington on 4/6; a
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER on Thompson's Point in Charlotte on 4/6 and several
sightings of EASTERN MEADOWLARKS in the Champlain Valley.

 

Two HORNED GREBES were spotted in Grand Isle on 6/4.

 

One lingering BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen in Grand Isle on 4/1 and 8 were
observed at Dead Creek WMA on 4/6.  A CANVASBACK drake was spotted at Delta
Park in Colchester on 4/4.

 

Five OSPREY nests are under construction at Sandbar WMA.  A MERLIN was seen
in East Dorset on 4/2 and 2 were seen at Dead Creek on 4/6.  A pair of
PEREGRINE FALCONS was observed at Bolton Notch on 4/6.

 

EASTERN BLUEBIRDS have been regularly seen inspecting bird houses.

 

There were many BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings this week, with the largest
number, 235, in Technology Park in South Burlington on 3/31.

 

Two SAVANNAH SPARROWS were spotted at Woodside Park in Essex on 4/6. 

 

An unconfirmed, second-hand report of a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK in
Brattleboro on 3/31 was submitted.

 

Thirteen PINE GROSBEAKS were seen in Eden on 4/1.

 

COMMON REDPOLLS are still being seen throughout the state and a HOARY
REDPOLL was sighted in Waitsfield on 4/2, 4/3 and 4/4.
