My daughter called me around 1:00 today to tell me she had just rescued a pileated from thrashing around on the side of 4A in Enfield. ( near the shaker village) she assumed it had been hit by a car and was concerned it would work it’s way back into the road. When she approached it it had no signs of blood, ruffled feathers, both wings were laying normally down it’s back etc. she gently picked it up and noticed a blue/purple substance on the sides of its beak. She said it was very calm and let her wipe away the blue color from its beak. She set it down under a tree away from the road and headed on her way.
When she passed back by 10-15 minutes later, someone else had stopped and was watching it.
If anyone has any more info on this bird I would like to know.
I wonder if it may have eaten some berries or grapes that were fermented, causing its “ drunken stupor.”
Hope it is ok.
