This morning Ed Hack and I looked for birds as we went in and out by
the northern end of Chateauguay Road, which, as a unmaintained Vermont
Class 4 Road in a comparatively remote part of Windsor County, extends
from Barnard south into Bridgewater. Our destination and primary
birding coverage were around beaver ponds located to the south of the
Appalachian Trail. To reach this area by vehicle, a high clearance 4WD/
AWD and a driver (such as Ed) experienced in driving on severely
rutted, muddy, narrow, roads are strongly recommended. This is not a
drive to be attempted soon after heavy rains.

Highlights along our route this morning were small numbers each of
Olive-sided Flycatchers, Swainson's Thrushes, Mourning Warblers, and
Canada Warblers. We suspect that at least some individuals of these
species might have been transient migrants rather than breeding
residents. Among the other bird species found were a Spotted
Sandpiper, a Chimney Swift seemingly distant from the nearest chimney,
a Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Yellow-shafted Flicker, Pileated
Woodpecker, Least Flycatcher, Eastern Kingbird, numerous Red-eyed
Vireos, Winter Wrens, Veery, Cedar Waxwings, 9 additional species of
warblers, a Rose-breasted Grosbeak, a Red-winged Blackbird, a
Baltimore Oriole, and 2 Purple Finches.
