This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, April 9, 2009.
A GREAT GRAY OWL was found foraging in the forest on the south side of Dame
Road in Durham near the Newmarket town line on April 4th. The owl was seen
again on April 6th, 7th, 8th.and 9th. To try to see the owl, take Dame Road
from Route 108 in Newmarket to a point about 1-mile beyond where the road
turns to dirt. Watch for an orange gate on the right (south) side of the
road. Park here and walk on the trail that leaves from the southeast corner
of the parking area behind the gate. Walk slowly and quietly and if you see
the owl, do not approach too closely (keep at least 50 feet away), or make
any sudden movements or loud sounds. Owls have very sensitive eyes, so
please, no flash photography. Please respect the owl and other birders.
A sub-adult GOLDEN EAGLE was seen in Bridgewater on April 5th.
A BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen at Moore Fields on Route 155A in Durham on
April 4th and 5th. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, and 20
GREEN-WINGED TEAL were seen here on April 4th.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen from McIntyre Road at the Pease International
Tradeport in Newington on April 4th.
Nearly 300 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen in Hanover on April 6th, over 70 were
seen in Salisbury on the 6th, and 12 were seen in Keene on the 6th.
A COMMON REDPOLL was seen in Wolfboro on April 5th.
A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen on Eel Pond in Rye on April 5th.
An ICELAND GULL and 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL were seen at the Rochester Wastewater
Treatment Plant on April 9th. A GLAUCOUS GULL and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL
were seen here on the 4th. The treatment plant is gated and the hours of
operation are 7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the
office and be out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have
to ask birders to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the
road. The Trails at Pickering Ponds, located east of the plant, are not
gated, and are always open during daylight hours.
An ICELAND GULL and 140 GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS were seen at the Exeter
Wastewater Treatment Plant on April 7th.
An ICELAND GULL was seen in New Castle on April 4th.
2 PIPING PLOVERS were reported from Hampton Beach on April 5th.
21 BRANT were seen along the coast at Rye Ledges on April 8th.
A flock of over 285 SNOW GEESE was seen flying over Surry Mountain on April
6th.
A SNOW GOOSE, 3 BALD EAGLES, 3 MEADOWLARKS, 42 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 32 COMMON
MERGANSERS, 3 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 4 WOOD DUCKS, 2 HOODED MERGANSERS, and 2
SAVANNAH SPARROWS were reported from Powder Mill Pond in Hancock on April
8th.
A GADWALL, 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 4 NORTHERN PINTAIL, and 113 GREEN-WINGED TEAL
were seen in Meadow Pond in Hampton on April 8th.
2 GADWALL were seen in North Hampton on April 5th.
4 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 78 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 2 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 10 KILLDEER,
20 WILSON'S SNIPE, and 2 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS were seen at Bodwell Farm in
East Kingston on April 8th.
2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL and 20 GREEN-WINGED TEAL were seen in fields along West
Portsmouth Street in Concord on April 4th.
2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL and a GADWALL were seen in Charlestown on April 6th, and
2 AMERICAN WIGEON and 49 GREEN-WINGED TEAL were seen in Charlestown on April
4th.
7 FISH CROWS were reported from East Kingston on April 8th.
3 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in Nelson on April 8th, and 5 were seen on
Hammond Hollow Road in Gilsum on the 5th.
A RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET was seen in Nelson on April 8th.
7 TREE SWALLOWS were reported from Concord, and 17 TREE SWALLOWS and 2 BARN
SWALLOWS were seen at Powder House Pond in Exeter, all on April 7th
An AMERICAN BITTERN was seen in Rye on April 5th.
4 OSPREY and 2 AMERICAN KESTRLS were seen at the Great Bay National Wildlife
Refuge on April 8th.
A flock of 18 TURKEY VULTURES was reported from Portsmouth on April 5th.
A SWAMP SPARROW was seen along the coast on April 4th.
A YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was seen in Keene on April 3rd, and one was seen in
Hanover on the 7th.
