Starting late this morning, Ed Hack and I birded in Vermont along the
Connecticut River from the Ledyard Bridge north to the Pompy area,
west onto Campbell Flats Road in Norwich, and then to the south
through the full length of the riverside Kilowatt Park in the Wilder
section of Hartford. On the list of 30 species for today were 2 Canada
Geese, Wood Ducks, 1 American Black Duck, and Hooded Mergansers.
Raptors were an immature Bald Eagle at Pompy, Red-tailed Hawks, and a
Sharp-shinned. The only gull was a Ring-billed. At least 4 flickers
were at Kilowatt North. Near Pompy were a phoebe and one Yellow-rumped
Warbler. Blue Jays and robins were numerous and widespread. At least 3
Savannah Sparrows were at the harvested corn field on Campbell Flats
Road. The only White-crowned Sparrow was an immature in my Norwich
village back yard where we also saw 2 White-throated Sparrows.
