This morning (July 8) Kyle Jones found and photographed an immature Black-crowned Night-Heron standing by the edge of one of cattail patches on the Ompompanoosuc River Flats in Norwich. I came along soon after he had found the bird which we saw from the pullout on Route 132 by the northbound I-91 overpass. The bird was to the east of the interstate. My thanks to Kyle for showing this bird to me.

Those Pompy cattail stands have in recent summers often been frequented by another uncommon species, the Marsh Wren, and this year there has been at least one eBird report, on July 3 by Mary Waugh, who found two birds and recorded songs there. Although those wrens can sing loudly, they have often been difficult to hear at Pompy because of traffic noise from the interstate.
