This is New Hampshire Audubon’s Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, January 29th, 
2014.



A SPOTTED TOWHEE was spotted in Rye on January 25th, and has been seen 
several times since then. It was last reported on January 29th. It has been 
seen foraging on the ground in the scrub on the corner nearest the traffic 
island at the intersection of Central Road and Route 1A. Interestingly, 
several EASTERN TOWHEES were also reported from the coast during the past 
week.



A female KING EIDER was seen from Ocean Street in New Castle several times 
during the past week. It was seen near Fort Constitution, and near Great 
Island Common.



A THICK-BILLED MURRE was seen at Great Boar’s Head in Hampton on January 
25th.



5 RAZORBILLS were seen from Great Island Common in New Castle on January 
23rd.



At least 6 SNOWY OWLS continued to be reported in New Hampshire during the 
past week including 2 along the coast in Rye, 1 at Pease International 
Tradeport, and 3 in the Hampton and Seabrook marsh areas.



A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen along Route 93 in Salem on January 29th, and 1 
was seen at Great Bay on the 25th.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in Pawtuckaway State Park in Nottingham on 
January 24th, and 1 was seen along Drinkwater Road in Exeter on the 25th



A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at Rockingham Park in Salem on January 29th, and 1 
was seen at Hampton Harbor, from the Seabrook side, on the 23rd.



An ICELAND GULL was seen in Hampton Harbor on January 27th, and at least 3 
others were seen along the coast during the past week.



3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS and 20 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at Hampton Beach State 
Park on January 24th.



At least 140 SNOW BUNTINGS and 4 HORNED LARKS were seen in the cornfields 
west of Peaked Farm in Piermont on January 26th



An AMERICAN PIPIT was seen along Route 1A by Rye Ledge in Rye on January 
26th.



A pair of GADWALL was seen from Great Island Common in New Castle on January 
25th.



A NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen in Hassell Brook in Nashua on January 29th, 1 
was seen from Pierce’s Island in Portsmouth on the 26th, and 1 was seen at 
the Exeter Wasterwater Treatment Plant on the 25th.



An AMERICAN COOT was seen on Wolfeboro Bay on Lake Winnipesaukee on January 
27th.



A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen on the coast on January 23rd.



At least 5 TURKEY VULTURES were reported from Exeter on January 26th.



Over 50 COMMON RAVENS were seen flying in Peterborough on January 29th.



The annual contest known as the “Superbowl of Birding” and sponsored by 
Massachusetts Audubon was held on January 25th. Over 84 bird species were 
reported from Rockingham County, including: BROWN THRASHER, YELLOW-BELLIED 
SAPSUCKER, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, LINCOLN’S SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED 
SPARROW, FOX SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW, SNOW BUNTING, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, 
GRAY CATBIRD, WINTER WREN, NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL, EASTERN SCREECH-OWL, 
MERLIN, NORTHERN GANNET, HERMIT THRUSH, NORTHERN FLICKER, and EASTERN 
BLUEBIRD(as well as some of the individually listed species mentioned in 
this edition of the Rare Bird Alert).
