This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for December 5, covering the period
November 29 – December 4, 2008.  

 

In addition to three SNOWY OWLS, the birding highlights of the week include
a NORTHERN GANNET seen off Thompson’s Point in Charlotte on 12/3; a GREAT
CORMORANT observed 12/4 near Porter Bay on Lake Champlain and a DICKCISSEL,
heard singing in Brandon on 12/1.

 

A very late GREAT EGRET was seen at the north end of Dead Creek along Slang
Road on 11/29 and along Basin Harbor Road on 11/30.

 

Six BLACK SCOTERS were observed at the Tri-town Water District Plant on
11/29.

 

A PEREGRINE FALCON was spotted in Addison on 11/29.

 

Three SNOWY OWLS were present in Vermont this week.  One has been seen for
several days (11/30 – 12/4) along Dana Hill Road, 1.2 miles from Rte. 105 in
West Charleston.  Two SNOWY OWLS were seen near Whiting on 12/4 by the same
observer, one at the junction of Route 30 and Shoreham/Whiting Road and
another 1 ˝ miles west of this intersection, along the Shoreham/Whiting
Road. 

 

A SHORT-EARED OWL was sighted at Button Bay State Park on 11/30.

 

NORTHERN SHRIKES were seen in Middlebury, Brattleboro, New Haven and
Waitsfield this week.

 

Four YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were observed at Button Bay State Park on 11/30.

 

PINE SISKIN numbers are increasing weekly, with sightings in Grafton,
Vergennes, Waitsfield, Saxton’s River, Howeville, Essex Junction, Brandon,
Middlebury and Button Bay State Park this week.
