5/2/09 - Hanover Conservation Council field trip to Wilson's Landing
(Hanover) and Post Pond (Lyme)

Rain clouds seemed to be moving north and we managed to avoid showers.
 Mostly cloudy; 50's, calm.

(Please pardon the randomness of the lists)

Wilson's Landing:
Canada Goose (one on backwater; 6 flyover)
Red-winged Blackbird (several males, one female)
Belted Kingfisher - pair
Swamp Sparrow - great, long look at one through the scope
Yellow Warbler - male, another good look
American Robin
American Goldfinch
Sandpiper on far side of river - best guess from flight pattern is
Spotted Sandpiper
Wood Ducks - two males flying south over the river

Post Pond:
Common Loon - pair
Canada Goose (7)
Warbling Vireo (heard many times but not located)
Song Sparrow
Chipping Sparrow
Tree Swallows (many!)
Killdeer
Common Grackle (many)
Red-wing Blackbird (many)
Eastern Phoebe
Common Yellowthroat - male
Yellow Warbler - male
Baltimore Oriole - male
Spotted Sandpiper (1)
Black-capped Chickadee
Downy Woodpecker - female
American Kestrel

After everyone departed, Jane Fant and I birded a bit more and also saw:
Lesser Yellowlegs (down along Clay Brook in the Chaffee Wildlife Sanctuary)
Mallard (flyover)
Northern Cardinal - male
Downy Woodpecker - male
Common Raven (heard)
Great Blue Heron (flyover)

Fun birding!
