Otto here...

This afternoon, while walking my yellow Lab, at a large (100+acre) hay field in west Woodstock, I saw a brilliant, white, large, hawk-like bird. By the time I walked back to my truck and got bino's, it had flown down the field to a tree on the edge.

My first thought was "snowy owl..." As I got closer, and with a better look, it didn't look like an Owl. After a bit, Scout (the Lab) ranged ahead, the bird flew and showed a brilliant flash of it's red-brown tail.

Scout and I watched for a while before it got tired of being on display and disappeared into surrounding November woods.

As soon as I got back to my van (and cell phone) I Googled "large white hawk with red tail ..."

"Leucistic red tail hawk..." was the top hit. Looked like what we saw. Pretty wild looking bird.

It's somewhere along Cox District Rd, west Woodstock.

Otto
