Today Ed Hack and I looked for birds in southern Windsor County  
including portions of the towns of Windsor, West Windsor,  
Weathersfield, and north Springfield. Some highlights from the more  
than 60 species follow.

To the north side of the North Springfield Dam were four mature  
Graylag Geese, well away from any human presence and "on their own".  
 From many yards away these geese appeared to be in good condition,  
but we could not determine whether they were capable of flight. Part  
of the time, they were swimming in the company of a flock of 27 Canada  
Geese. The Graylag Goose is not included in checklists of wild birds  
in Vermont, and birds such as those seen today are presumed to be  
either escapes or deliberate releases from captivity.

Other bird species of special interest today included
a Great Blue Heron and a Green Heron at north Springfield;
a flying Northern Harrier, an American Kestrel, and a well seen Black- 
billed Cuckoo at the Windsor prison farm;
a Wilson's Snipe in a marshy area south of Hunt Road near its  
intersection with Marton Road in Windsor;
and two Prairie Warblers, a Field Sparrow, and a Savannah Sparrow in  
the vicinity of the north Springfield airport.
