This fine morning Ed Hack and I birded at Campbell Flats in Norwich, VT, where we were a bit later joined for a time by Chris Rimmer and then Bill Shepard. I’ll mention here only a few highlights among the birds.

A few Common Mergansers on the Ompompanoosuc River contrasted with the Hooded Mergansers not seen this morning but often seen lately at Pompy and elsewhere nearby.

At Campbell Flats today, a low flying brownish Northern Harrier over the cornfield flushed numerous birds including Red-winged Blackbirds and about 60 Bobolinks. An immature Cooper’s Hawk was perched on one of numerous snags and might well have been the same individual bird seen in that vicinity over the past few days.

An Olive-sided Flycatcher was perched for a time on another snag and provided superb scope views. A nice variety of species of other landbirds seen included a few Veery, Eastern Bluebird, Northern Parula, Chestnut-sided Warblers, Black-and-white Warbler, American Redstarts, and Ccmmon Yellowthroats as well as several Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, several Scarlet Tanagers, and a Baltimore Oriole.
