This is New Hampshire Audubon’s Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, February 5th,
2014.
A SPOTTED TOWHEE was spotted in Rye on January 25th, and has been seen many
times since then. It was last reported on February 5th. It has been seen
foraging on the ground in the scrub on the corner nearest the traffic island
at the intersection of Central Road and Route 1A. An EASTERN TOWHEE was seen
in North Hampton on the 1st.
A female KING EIDER was seen from Ocean Avenue in New Castle several times
during the past week and was last reported on February 1st. It was seen near
Fort Constitution, and near Great Island Common. 3 GADWALL were seen in Rye
on February 1st.
A THICK-BILLED MURRE, 6 RAZORBILLS and a male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE were all
seen several times at Great Boar’s Head in Hampton during the past week, and
3 RAZORBILLS were seen at Rye Ledge in Rye on February 1st.
At least 8 SNOWY OWLS continued to be reported in New Hampshire during the
past week including 2 along the coast in Rye, 3 in the Hampton and Seabrook
marsh areas, one on a rooftop near Elm and Myrtle Streets in Manchester on
February 4th, one seen in a tree near the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on
January 29th, and one from North Charlestown on January 30th.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in Westmoreland on January 31st.
A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at Hampton Harbor, from the Seabrook side, on
February 3rd, and 1 with different plumage was seen in at Great Boar’s Head
in Hampton on February 1st.
An ICELAND GULL was seen in Hampton Harbor on January 27th, and 1 was seen
at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on February 3rd.
50 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at Chickering Road in Westmoreland on February
1st, and 31 were reported from the area of the Wilder Dam in Lebanon on
January 31st.
15 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen off of Little Boar’s Head in North Hampton on
February 1st.
A GREAT CORMORANT and a PEREGRINE FALCON were seen in Manchester on January
31st.
2 FISH CROWS were reported from Litchfield on January 31st.
A RUSTY BLACKBIRD has been regularly seen visiting a birdfeeder in Sandwich
and was last reported on February 2nd, and 2 were seen in Pittsfield on the
1st.
A GRAY CATBIRD was seen in Rye on February 3rd.
A WINTER WREN was reported from Westmoreland on February 2nd.
A HERMIT THRUSH was seen in Seabrook on February 1st.
A TURKEY VULTURE was seen in Exeter on February 4th.
An AMERICAN KESTREL was seen in Rye on February 4th, a MERLIN was seen in
Hampton on the 1st, and a MERLIN was seen at the Hanover Country Club on the
3rd.
A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL, an EASTERN SCREECH-OWL, and a GREAT HORNED OWL were
all reported from Rye on February 1st.
A flock of over 225 CEDAR WAXWINGS was seen in Hanover on January 29th.
80 COMMON MERGANSERS and 50 HOODED MEGANSERS were seen on the Connecticut
River near the Wilder Dam in Lebanon on January 31st.
Over 500 BLACK SCOTERS were tallied along the coast on February 1st.
