On this breezy, sunny afternoon Ed Hack and I birded in the
southeastern part of Windsor County. Here are some highlights.

Springfield Meadows yielded 21 species including a Blue Goose (dark
form of the Snow Goose), an estimated 550 Canada Geese, 44 Wood Ducks,
30 Black Ducks, 25 Mallards, 3 Green-winged Teal, 4 Common Mergansers
[in the adjacent Connecticut River], a Sharp-shinned Hawk, 3 Ring-
billed Gulls, a Northern Flicker, and an aggregation of an estimated
100 American Robins. (Road instructions to reach the Meadows are below.)

In the Amsden section of Weathersfield, a Northern Shrike occupied a
treetop perch in a fairly open area along the south side of Route 131
to the east of the intersection with Lottery Lane.

To reach the Springfield Meadows (also known as Springfield Flats)
from I-91, take Exit 7 and turn east on Route 11. Just before reaching
the Route 11 bridge across the Connecticut River, turn left onto Route
5. Continue north on Route 5 for roughly 1.5 miles where a paved road
(labeled as "Old Connecticut River" Road in the DeLorme Atlas) goes to
the right. This paved road on the east, together with Route 5 on the
west, border and completely surround the low lying Meadows. The
Meadows can be seen from both roads, but Route 5 has high speed traffic.
