This afternoon (March 6) a male and a female Common Goldeneye were
swimming and diving together in the Connecticut River as seen from
Foley Park in Norwich by the Ledyard Bridge. The goldeneyes were in
the main channel of the river and swam from the ice cover on the west
side over to the east side, so were within Hanover, NH, at least part
of the time. Ice still covered most of the cove on the Vermont side,
though with a small area of open water by the railway bridge.
This was my first sighting of Common Goldeneye from Norwich during 2010.
Other birds around Foley Park this afternoon included a Downy
Woodpecker, a crow, 6 Cedar Waxwings, and 3 House Finches.
