This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Tuesday, August 24th,
2010.
8 FORSTER'S TERNS were seen in Hampton Harbor, and 6 CASPIAN TERNS were
reported from the Hampton area, all on August 22nd.
A CASPIAN TERN was seen in Rye Harbor, and a FORSTER'S TERN was seen at Seal
Rocks in Rye, both on August 21st.
A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 8 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 15 LEAST
SANDPIPERS, a NORTHERN SHOVELER, a NORTHERN PINTAIL, 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, and
a GREAT CORMORANT, were seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on
August 19th, and a GREAT EGRET was seen here on the 20th. The treatment
plant is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you
visit, please check in at the office and be out of the plant by 2:45 so that
plant personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. Do not drive on the
dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering Ponds, located east
of the plant, are not gated, and are always open during daylight hours.
82 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 912 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 4 WHIMBRELS, 5 RUDDY
TURNSTONES, a RED KNOT, 50 SANDERLINGS,
1,500 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 6 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 20 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, 20 LAUGHING GULLS, 2 ROSEATE TERNS, a FISH CROW, and a PURPLE
MARTIN were reported from the coast on August 22nd. The majority was seen in
the Hampton Harbor area.
A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on
August 20th. Also present were 6 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, a NORTHERN PINTAIL, a
PIED-BILLED GREBE, and a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER.
5 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were seen at the Pease International Tradeport from
Grafton Drive on August 20th.
50 GREAT EGRETS, 60 SNOWY EGRETS, 100 COMMON TERNS, and 4 ROSEATE TERNS were
seen in Hampton Harbor on August 21st.
A juvenile BLACK GUILLEMOT was seen Little Harbor from Fort Stark in New
Castle on August 21st, and one was seen from Foss Beach in Rye on the 22nd.
A DICKCISSEL was reported from Hampstead on August 19th.
An ORCHARD ORIOLE was reported from the New Hampshire Fish & Game Bellamy
River Wildlife Management Area in Dover on August 21st.
3 GREAT EGRETS were seen in Daniel's Lake in Weare on August 21st, and a
GREAT EGRET was seen in Whittier Pond in Hopkinton on August 19th.
34 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen in Rochester on August 23rd. COMMON
NIGHTHAWKS were reported in small numbers from several locations during the
past week as they begin migrating south.
A CORY'S SHEARWATER, 40 GREAT SHEARWATERS, 5 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 2 MANX
SHEARWATERS, 25 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 20 NORTHERN GANNETS, 3 BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS, 5 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, a BONAPARTE'S GULL, a LAUGHING GULL, a
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, a CASPIAN TERN, 2 ROSEATE TERNS, 150 COMMON TERNS,
and 700 TREE SWALLOWS were reported from between Portsmouth and the Isles of
Shoals and in-and-around the Isles of Shoals on August 19th.
A birder on the Granite State Whale Watch out of Rye Harbor reported 6
CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 65 GREAT SHEARWATERS, a SOOTY SHEARWATER, 226 WILSON'S
STORM-PETRELS, 30 NORTHERN GANNETS, 9 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 3 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS, 2 LAUGHING GULLS, 14 COMMON TERNS, 4 BLACK GUILLEMOTS on August 21st,
and a birder on a similar cruise saw in addition, a GREAT CORMORANT, 2
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, a WHIMBREL, 15 SANDERLINGS, a ROSEATE TERN and 1,000
TREE SWALLOWS on August 20th.
4 CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 15 GREAT SHEARWATERS, a MANX SHEARWATER, 125 WILSON'S
STORM-PETRELS, 5 LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS, 4 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 3
SANDERLINGS, 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 4 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, a PARASITIC JAEGER, 3 LAUGHING GULLS, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULL, 8 COMMON TERNS, an ARCTIC TERN, and 5 BLACK TERNS were reported by a
birder on an Eastman's boat trip out of Hampton to Fippennies Ledge, located
approximately 70 miles due east of Hampton, on August 20th.
