The fifth in the series of Norwich 2010 Birding Quest walks began this
morning with a two mile walk along Hogback Road and then continued
with a series of addenda including a short walk on Campbell Flats
Road, and visits to Pompy, Kendal Station Road, the Pompy Farms area,
and the Foley Park area, all in Norwich. The bird species total for
this morning was 61. The weather was mainly cloudy, windy, and cool.

Among highlights were:

Solitary Sandpiper 1 along Campbell Flats Road near Patterson Road

Greater Yellowlegs 1 at Pompy

Eastern Kingbird 4 together along Hogback Road

Swallows: More than 60, including at least Tree, Bank, Cliff, and Barn
Swallows, were flying around over the cove and adjacent Connecticut
River in the Foley Park (Ledyard Bridge) area. Smaller numbers of Barn
Swallows were seen in two locations along Hogback Road.

Veery 1 spotted by Ed Hack along Hogback Road

Cedar Waxwings 34 in a flock along Hogback Road

Warblers: 9 species, of which Black-throated Blue, Black-throated
Green, and Blackburnian were among warbler species along Hogback Road

Scarlet Tanager 1 singing along Hogback Road

White-crowned Sparrow 2 seen at close range, with at least one
singing, along Kendal Station Road

Rose-breasted Grosbeak 1 spotted by Cindy Crawford on Kendal Station
Road

Indigo Bunting 1 brilliant male at a sunflower seed feeder along
Hogback Road

Baltimore Oriole at both Kendal Station Road and Foley Park

Special thanks to Doug Hardy, who reported, as of 3:38 PM today, that
the total number of bird species found from Norwich so far this year
stands at 133, including three first-of-the-year sightings in this
posting (solitary, yellowlegs, and veery).
