I thought UVBirders might be interested in this memo from Lou-Anne Conroy
concerning the nighthawk project.

Subject: nighthawks are on their way!

Hi everyone,

Over the past two days I have received reports of nighthawks booming over
rooftops in Concord and large numbers migrating along the Merrimack River
through out the day! I am sending this email out to interested people in
case any of you have a chance to participate in any migration observations
along the Connecticut River over the next few days and into next week. Box
store locations and downtowns along the river valley are also good places to
listen for their "peents" at dusk! In addition, for those of you who are
involved in nest patch monitoring, I wanted to give you a heads up that they
are on their way!

I have attached a form from NH Audubon and I would greatly appreciate it if
you could fill it out and send it to NH Audubon or to me with any data you
may collect. Please keep in mind that zero nighthawks observed in any given
location and date and time is important data to pass along!

For those of you with nest patches on your rooftops, I have also included a
"Nest Patch Monitoring Form" (attached to the "Nest Patch Registration
Form"). If you could plan on formally observing the nests once during the 3
weeks listed on the form and sending the form to Becky Suomala at NH Audubon
in Concord, Project Nighthawk would greatly appreciate all your efforts.

Quick update: As of this spring, Claremont High School has 2 nest patches
installed, Woodsville High School has 3 nest patches installed, Lebanon High
School has 2 nest patches now installed. We now have 14 nest patches
installed in the area! Thanks to all of you!!

Finally, thank you all very much for your interest and help in this
experiment! Let's keep our fingers crossed! I would appreciate it if you
could keep me informed of any observations you make over the next several
months. We are also interested in checking on a report of nighthawks nesting
on Mt. Cardigan. Do any of you hike that mountain? Would you be willing to
check this location out during the summer at sunset, listening for their
call? Please pass this information on to any other people you know who may
be interested.

Thank you!

Best Regards,

Lou-Anne Conroy

Project Nighthawk Upper Valley Coordinator
