This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Friday, January 2nd,
2009.
A RED PHALAROPE was seen along the coast in Hampton on January 1st.
A SNOWY OWL was located in Milford on December 27th and has been seen
several times since then with the most recent report from January 1st. The
owl has been seen in the fields located behind Hayward's Ice Cream on Elm
Street in Milford. A SNOWY OWL was seen in the marsh behind Ray's Seafood on
Route 1A in Rye on the 26th.
A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen from Route 1A near the town line where Rye and
North Hampton meet on December 24th, and one was seen at the Dillant-Hopkins
Airport in Swanzey during the Keene Christmas Bird Count on the 20th.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen near Pickering Ponds in Rochester on December
29th and 30th, and a MERLIN was reported from Spofford on December 24th.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in Strafford on December 30th.
15 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen on Hammond Hollow Road in Gilsum on December
30th.
4 PINE GROSBEAKS and 16 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen visiting a feeder in
Jefferson during the past week. 20 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen on Hammond
Hollow Road in Gilsum on December 26th.
25 COMMON REDPOLLS were seen on the Trudeau Road trails in Bethlehem on
December 30th, and 2 were seen in North Conway on January 1st.
2 RED CROSSBILLS were seen in Strafford on December 29th.
A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and 5 NORTHERN PINTAILS were seen from Great Boar's
Head in Hampton on December 31st.
21 SNOW GEESE were seen flying south along the coast on January 1st. A flock
of 24 SNOW GEESE was seen near Pickering Ponds in Rochester on December 29th
and 30th. 3 SNOW GEESE were seen on December 30th and over 850 CANADA GEESE
were seen at Moore Fields on Route 155A in Durham on December 29th..
2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 3 GLAUCOUS GULLS, and 5 ICELAND GULLS were seen
at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on December 30th. The treatment
plant is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you
visit, please check in at the office and be out of the plant by 2:45 so that
plant personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. Do not drive on the
dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering Ponds, located east
of the plant, are not gated, and are always open during daylight hours.
A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen in Hampton Harbor on January 1st, and an ICELAND
GULL was seen at Hampton Beach State Park on December 30th. An ICELAND GULL
was seen at the Nashua Landfill on December 29th, and 2 BONAPARTE'S GULLS
were seen off of Great Boar's Head in Hampton on January 1st.
A BOREAL CHICKADEE was seen on Bog Road in Penacook on December 30th, and 2
were reported from the Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson on the 26th.
A DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT and a GREAT CORMORANT were seen together on the
Exeter River in Exeter on December 28th.
2 LESSER SCAUP were seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant, and 3
GREATER SCAUP, 60 COMMON GOLDENEYES, and 12 HOODED MERGANSERS were seen on
Lake Winnisquam in Laconia, all on December 28th.
A TURKEY VULTURE was seen in Epping on December 30th and 2 were seen in
Newmarket on the 29th.
An EASTERN TOWHEE was reported from Wilton on January 1st, and a FOX SPARROW
was seen near Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on January 1st.
158 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 50 COMMON MERGANSERS, 62 HOODED MERGANSERS, 23 CANADA
GEESE, 174 MALLARDS, 90 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 3 RING-BILLED GULLS, a HERRING
GULL, a NORTHERN FLICKER, a BELTED KINGFISHER, 20 HORNED LARKS, and 150 PINE
SISKINS were reported from the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on December
27th.
A hiker reported 7 BOREAL CHICKADEES, 4 GRAY JAYS, 2 BLACK BACKED
WOODPECKERS, 2 HAIRY WOODPECKERS, 1 DOWNY WOODPECKER and 2 COMMON RAVENS on
the Crawford Path in Crawford Notch on December 26th.
There has been a large invasion of PINE SISKINS reported from throughout the
state during the past week, and there have also been scattered sightings of
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, SNOW BUNTINGS and HORNED LARKS from coastal and
inland sites. There have also been scattered sightings of PURPLE SANDPIPERS
along the coast during the past week.
12 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 2 HOODED MERGANSERS, a HERRING GULL, 4 BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS, a CAROLINA WREN, 182 AMERICAN ROBINS, 30 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, 3
SONG SPARROWS, 2 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, 9 PURPLE FINCHES, 286 PINE
SISKINS, 276 AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES, and 3 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were some
of the highlights of the Grafton-Bristol Christmas Bird Count on December
28th.
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 4 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 3 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, a
NORTHERN SHRIKE, 135 AMERICAN ROBINS, 16 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, 103 BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS, 2 BOREAL CHICKADEES, 9 PINE GROSBEAKS, 17 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS,
15 COMMON REDPOLLS, and 559 PINE SISKINS were some of the highlights of the
Sandwich Christmas Bird Count on December 28th.
2 BALD EAGLES, 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 3 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 3 HERRING GULLS, 8
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, 2 CAROLINA WRENS, 16 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, an
EASTERN BLUEBIRD, 151 AMERICAN ROBINS, 45 CEDAR WAXWINGS, 50 AMERICAN TREE
SPARROWS, 2 SONG SPARROWS, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, 4 PURPLE FINCHES, a
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, 3 COMMON REDPOLLS, 619 PINE SISKINS, 391 AMERICAN
GOLDFINCHES, and 13 EVENING GROSBEAKS were some of the highlights of the
Peterborough-Hancock Christmas Bird Count on December 28th.
A NORTHERN PINTAIL, 12 BALD EAGLES, a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 8 ICELAND GULLS,
5 GLAUCOUS GULLS, a "NELSON'S GULL, 5 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 37
RED-BELLED WOODPECKERS, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, 7 CAROLINA WRENS, 5 WINTER WRENS,
4 HERMIT THRUSHES, 2 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, a PINE
WARBLER, an EASTERN TOWHEE, 153 SNOW BUNTINGS, 4 COMMON REDPOLLS, 90
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, 69 PINE SISKINS, and 1,200 AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES
were some of the highlights of the Lee-Durham Christmas Bird Count on
December 27th.
A SNOWY OWL, 2 WOOD DUCKS, 9 HOODED MERGANSERS, 10 BALD EAGLES, a MERLIN, 28
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, 12 NORTHERN FLICKERS, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 9
CAROLINA WRENS, 926 AMERICAN ROBINS, 3 FIELD SPARROWS, 48 WHITE-THROATED
SPARROWS, and 78 PINE SISKINS were some of the highlights of the
Nashua-Hollis Christmas Bird Count on December 27th.
