A few years back my 40ish son commented that “you know you are old when you are watching birds”. Not so, I have been enjoying them since 1960 when I had to pass my bird test in Nature at Lanakila, an Aloha Foundation camp, in order to earn my Loki.
Janet and I now have the pleasure of watching a pair of bluebirds inspecting and deciding whether they want to make the house I built with my grandchildren their home. They have been checking it out the past few days. They do not appear to be building but they keep going in and out. About 10 feet from the house we put a 1/2 inch 4 foot fiberglass fence rod he enjoys perching upon. I think they are establishing their territory. What do you all think?
A few days back we had the unusual appearance of a pair of Pine Grosbeaks visit the feeder for about 10 minutes. We haven’t seen them since. We did find a bloody spot and a beautiful, tiny orangish feather on the ground near the feeder. The Cooper’s Hawk has made a least one appearance we have seen recently.
Additionally, around the farm Song Sparrows have returned. There are lots of Red Wings, Goldfinch, Evening Grosbeaks, Cardinals, Bluejays. Well, you get the idea. Check out eBird/Crossroad Farm for a complete list of the 24 species recently observed.
Please feel free to bird here this spring and add to the list. If you would like an e map of the trails, please send me an email. There is over a 100 acres of varied habitat.
