While running some errands in West Leb, I decided to check out the feeder in front of Beverage King (Thank you Dave Merker). I spotted a sparrow on the feeder I initially assumed was an American Tree Sparrow. But on closer scrutiny, I saw that it had a dark chestnut crown with black streaks, a white superciliary and a black eyeliner. The underparts were evenly gray. The beak was entirely pale pinkish, not bicolored. Alas, I did not have my camera! After off and on views over about ten minutes on the feeder (the feeder was very active and the chickadees aggressive) and a few minutes on the ground with a junco, it flew off across the street not to return. For contrast, an American Tree Sparrow showed up shortly afterward. Occurrence of Chipping Sparrow in the Upper Valley is not unprecedented. In fact, 5 were found last February 14 by Kyle Jones over in White River Jct.
