While contemplating bluebirds as I went out into the blizzard this
morning, I startled a big, noisy pileated sitting in the crab tree in
front of our door. We locked gazes and I saw the radiant scarlet crest
feathers, brown eyes, and powerful body up close. He squawked. I
jumped. He was gone. The skies seem to be filled with grand sights
this winter.
