My wife Leslie and I were more than a little surprised to have a close
encounter with a male Red Phalarope on Grafton Pond this afternoon. The
bird was swimming and foraging on open water 25-50 feet from the
northeastern shore of the pond. We observed it from our kayaks as close
as 6 feet away for a good 10 minutes, and it was generally unconcerned
about us. Not where I expected to find my life Red Phalarope!
We also saw 4 adult Common Loons, including a pair with a single chick
that is about 1/3 full-grown. Someone else reported a pair with
chick(s) in a different part of the pond, so it appears there are two
nesting pairs there this summer.
