The Norwich 2010 Birding Quest will add a new twist on Saturday
October 2, 2010, with a bird banding demonstration from 7:00-10:00
am. Chris Rimmer and George Clark will lead this outing, which will
include mist-netting and banding of migrant birds, as well as walking
the orchard and woodland trails in the Norwich nature area to search
for resident birds and southbound migrants. Banding is a commonly-
used technique used by field ornithologists to study migratory
patterns and ecology of songbirds, which are harmlessly captured in
fine nylon mist nets stretched between bamboo poles. It provides a
unique opportunity for observers to experience an up-close encounter
with birds in the hand, as well as to learn about their identification
characteristics, plumages, and natural history. This outing is open
to both Norwich residents and others, but young children will need
supervision by adults. Meet at the Marion Cross School parking lot by
the nature area trailhead at 7:00 am, and wear comfortable walking
shoes or boots. The grass may be wet. In case of persistent rain,
the outing will be postponed until Sunday morning from 7-10:00 am.

Road instructions: From Exit 13 off I-91, turn toward the village of
Norwich. Upon entering the village along Main Street, turn at the
first right onto the paved road which passes between St. Barnabas
Church and the village green. After passing the Marion Cross School on
the left, take the first right into the parking area which is the
meeting point for this bird walk.
