This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for November 7, covering the period
October 31 - November 6, 2008.  

 

The birding highlight of the week was a FORSTER'S TERN seen off Grand Isle
on 11/1.

 

There were 3,500 SNOW GEESE at Dead Creek as of 11/7/08.  Two CACKLING GEESE
(Richardson's subspecies) were spotted in Shelburne Bay on 11/4.  A juvenile
BRANT was also seen in Shelburne Bay 11/3 - 11/5.

 

Two GOLDEN EAGLES were observed flying overhead in Essex, a juvenile on 11/1
and an adult on 11/2.

 

A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen at Brilyea Access at Dead Creek WMA on 11/1 and
three were seen off Gage Road at Dead Creek on 11/6.

 

Late-departing BLUE-HEADED VIREOS were spotted in Hartland (1 on 11/3) and
Rutland Town (1 on 11/6).  A lingering PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen in
Waitsfield on 11/31.

 

Fifteen BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were observed at the Charlotte Ferry Landing
parking lot on 11/1.

 

A late WILSON'S WARBLER was seen on 11/1 off the Whitney Creek Trail in
Addison.

 

Seven LAPLAND LONGSPURS were spotted in Vergennes on 11/5. 

 

SNOW BUNTING sightings occurred in East Barnard (4), Shelburne Bay (85+),
Danby (1) and Derby (1) this week.

 

PINE SISKINS were seen in several locations this week, including Highgate
Springs (200), Lake Pauline (6), Rutland Town (12) and Westminster.
