Among highlights of yesterday morning's field trip in Norwich, VT, by
the Mascoma Chapter of New Hampshire Audubon were 2 Common Nighthawks
flying over Hanover, NH, as visible from across the Connecticut River
near the mouth of the Ompompanoosuc River on the Vermont side.
Apparently none of about 18 birders saw more than one of the
nighthawks, but Cindy Crawford's later examination of her digital
photos revealed the presence of 2 nighthawks. One of several Wilson's
Warblers known to be found recently in the Upper Valley was seen
shortly thereafter along Campbell Flats Road. Among more than 45 bird
species found, Eastern Kingbirds and Bobolinks were notably numerous
during that field trip. Special thanks to Blake Allison for compiling
the eBird reports.
E-bird reports from at least three experienced observers and a photo
in eBird document the presence of 2 immature Black-crowned Night-
Herons yesterday at North Springfield Reservoir (VT). Five of us from
the Mascoma Chapter looked unsuccessfully this morning for the night-
herons, but we did find, in Springfield and Weathersfield, more than
40 bird species including Great and Snowy Egrets as well as a
Semipalmated Plover, a few Solitary Sandpipers, and 2 Lesser
Yellowlegs among the shorebirds. Two immature Bald Eagles, with at
least one calling, were perched close to this year's nest, and an
adult eagle was seen in the vicinity.
