We added Common Nighthawk to our "yard bird" list this evening, at 7.4
km from the Connecticut River (as the nighthawk flys). Between 6:40 and
7:15 one was actively foraging, at times <30 meters overhead. We saw
only one bird at any moment, but cannot rule out a carefully
choreographed act by more than one.
Interesting to speculate as to why we haven't seen them here in past
years (i.e., away from the river)... dry conditions, freshly mowed
lawn/field, more interesting homework?
