This morning I saw a flock of about 45 Bohemian Waxwings on the Dartmouth College campus in Hanover. As I was headed to class I spotted them perched in the top of an oak next to Wilder Hall. Thankfully I had a few extra minutes, so I got a little closer and stopped to watch the birds. As I approached, the flock began to drop down into a fruiting tree that was even closer to me and right at eye level, so it looked as if I was in for some great views. At that moment, though, an immature Cooper’s Hawk came bombing in and chased the whole flock away. When the flock was in flight, I could see that there were no Cedar Waxwings mixed in. The flock made one big circle overhead, briefly landed back in the oak, then took off again and headed off to the east and out of sight, still pursued by the hawk. This afternoon I walked all around campus in search of the flock, but I could not find them again. I will definitely be keeping my eyes open!
