A band of eight birders this morning enjoyed a field trip in Norwich,
VT, as arranged by the Milton Frye Nature Area Committee. Although
there was plenty of sunshine, a brilliant clear sky, and an abundance
of fresh green foliage, relatively low temperatures and wind combined
to produce a crisp and chilly feel for a late May day. Most of the
bird species found were singing or otherwise vocalizing which helped
considerably in detecting their presence.
Highlights included a Pileated Woodpecker, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Red-
eyed Vireos, Tree Swallows, House Wrens, Eastern Bluebirds, eight
species of warblers (Black-and-white, Chestnut-sided, Ovenbird, Black-
throated Green, Blackburnian, Yellow-rumped, Pine, and Common
Yellowthroat), Chipping and Song Sparrows, and a Scarlet Tanager. All
species found this morning are likely breeding in or near the Norwich
nature area.
Special thanks to Charlie Harcourt for keeping records and preparing
