This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for January 1, 2007 covering the period
December 25 - 31, 2006.

 

            A southbound GREAT BLUE HERON was sighted over Grand Isle on
12/30.

 

            Two TURKEY VULTURES were spotted in Bellows Falls on 12/26.

 

            On 12/30 approximately 2,800 SNOW GEESE were seen flying south
over Grand Isle. A NORTHERN PINTAIL was sighted on the 12/16 Saxtons River
CBC. Two HARLEQUIN DUCKS were last sighted 12/29 from Shelburne Point.   A
female WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was spotted in Shelburne Bay on 12/28 and a male
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was observed in a large flock of COMMON GOLDENEYES off of
Shelburne Beach on 12/29.

 

            An almost totally white RED-TAILED HAWK was last sighted on
12/28 in Dorset Hollow.

 

            A first-year ICELAND GULL was observed at the Burlington
Intervale compost works on 12/24.

 

            A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was seen in Dorset on 12/28 and there
was a late report of 4 sightings of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS on the Saxtons
River CBC on 12/16.  NORTHERN FLICKERS, apparently still able to locate ants
in the unfrozen ground this winter, were spotted in Clarendon (12/27), New
Haven (12/27) and West Rutland (12/28) as well as on the Saxtons River CBC
on 12/16. 

 

            There was a late report of an EASTERN PHOEBE that was seen on
the Champlain Islands/St. Albans CBC on 12/17.

 

            NORTHERN SHRIKES were spotted in Waitsfield, Dorset and Brandon
this week.

 

            CAROLINA WRENS were observed in Rutland, East Dorset, Woodstock
and White River Junction this week. Eight CAROLINA WRENS  and 4 WINTER WRENS
were sighted on the Saxtons River CBC on 12/16.

 

            A RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET was spotted on the Saxtons River CBC
12/16.

 

            There were several EASTERN BLUEBIRD sightings this week,
including one individual in Rutland on 12/28 that had a winged insect in its
beak and 5 birds which were investigating nest boxes in New Haven on 12/27.
On 12/16 forty-two EASTERN BLUEBIRDS and a HERMIT THRUSH were seen on the
Saxtons River CBC.

 

            The Saxtons River CBC included the sightings of 57 AMERICAN
PIPITS, 1 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and 1 SWAMP SPARROW during the week of
12/16.

 

            Twelve WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were spotted in Moose Bog on
12/25 and 6 in Nulhegan Basin on 12/29.  Seven COMMON REDPOLLS were seen in
Norwich on 12/27.  Thirty PINE SISKINS were observed in Moose Bog on 12/25
and 2 in Nulhegan Basin on 12/29.
