This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for May 21, 2007 covering the period May
14-May 20, 2007.

 

The highlights of this week were a RUDDY TURNSTONE seen at Herrick's Cove on
5/18 and 5/19, a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER also seen at Herrick's Cove on 5/19
and 5/20 and an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER spotted in Pittsford on 5/17.

 

A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen at Delta Park and in South Hero on 5/17.

 

Two GREAT EGRETS were spotted at Muddy Brook Marsh in South Burlington on
5/16.

 

At Berlin Pond on 5/18 seven WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were observed.

 

A male and female SPRUCE GROUSE were sighted at Moose Bog on 5/13.

 

Shorebirds were plentiful in all the expected spots, particularly Dead Creek
and Herrick's Cove this past week.  SEMI-PALMATED PLOVERS were seen at
Herrick's Cove (4 on 5/15, 12 on 5/18 and 6 on 5/20) and at Dead Creek (8 on
5/20).  GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS were observed throughout the state.
There were numerous sightings of SEMIPALMATED and LEAST SANDPIPERS
(including 65 of the latter at Herrick's Cove on 5/18) throughout the state.
There were several sightings of DUNLINS this week including Herrick's Cove
on 5/18, 5/19 (3) and 5/20 (4) as well as Dead Creek (13 on 5/20).
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS were spotted at Herrick's Cove on 5/18 (6) and Dead
Creek on 5/20.

 

A CASPIAN TERN was seen at Delta Park on 5/17.  A COMMON TERN was spotted at
Herrick's Cove on 5/17.  Twenty-two BLACK TERNS were seen on 5/16 in
Plainfield (2 on 5/17), along with one at Herrick's Cove on 5/17 and 5/20
and 2 in Adamant on 5/18.

 

A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was spotted at Herrick's Cove on 5/20.

 

 PHILADELPHIA VIREOS were sighted in Middlebury, Berlin Pond, West Rutland
Marsh, Herrick's Cove and West Haven this week.

 

There was a large warbler fall-out this week and the highlights included:  2
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS in Essex on 5/14 and 1 in Hinesburg on 5/14;
BREWSTER'S WARBLER in Windsor on 5/12 and in West Haven at the Buckner
Preserve on 5/19; TENNESSEE WARBLERS in Brandon, Berlin Pond, Rutland,
Quechee, South Burlington, Middlebury, Essex, Herrick's Cove, and West
Haven; CAPE MAY WARBLERS in Brandon (1/15 and 1/17), Berlin Pond and
Woodstock (5/17) and Burlington (2 on 5/18); BAY-BREASTED WARBERS, too
numerous to mention; WILSON'S WARBLER in Norwich, South Burlington, Bellows
Falls, Woodstock, Norwich Quechee and Herrick's Cove (8 on 5/18); a CERULEAN
WARBLER sighting at Snake Mountain on 5/19 and 5/20 and WILSON'S WARBLERS in
Norwich, South Burlington, Bellows Falls, Woodstock, Norwich, Quechee and
Herrick's Cove (8 on 5/18).

 

An ORCHARD ORIOLE was spotted at Herrick's Cove on 5/16.
