Some highlights among more than two dozen bird species we encountered
this morning (September 16) in northern Windsor County, Vermont,
included
1) Hooded Mergansers (flock of 7) at the northern pond along Kenyon
Hill Road in Sharon (reached from North Pomfret Road in Pomfret).
2) Red-tailed Hawk (one adult) at the eastern end of Sugar House Road
in Pomfret (reached from North Pomfret Road).
3) Blue-headed Vireo, along with 2 Red-eyed Vireos, along Bunker Hill
Road off North Pomfret Road in Pomfret.
4) Warbling Vireo, with dozens of songs along the causeway at Dewey's
Mills Pond in the Quechee section of Hartford. Because of the number
of songs this was an especially impressive example of bird song in a
season when singing tends to be fairly limited for most species.
5) Common Yellowthroat. An adult male sang at the northern pond along
Kenyon Hill Road in Sharon.
Also, early this afternoon a Ruby-throated Hummingbird was in the
backyard here in Norwich village.
