Ed Hack and I looked for birds in southeastern Windsor County, VT,
today (March 10). Extensive stretches along the Connecticut River and
most lakes/ponds remained largely ice-covered. Some bird highlights
follow.
Canada Geese -- 3 flocks moving northward. The largest flock of about
50 birds was seen at Lake Runnemede in Windsor. Two individuals were
at a patch of open water on the Connecticut River by Springfleld.
American Black Ducks -- 2 at Lake Runnemede and several at North
Hartland
Mallards -- widespread including dozens at North Hartland
Common Goldeneye -- a few males in the Connecticut River at North
Hartland
Wild Turkey -- 2 flocks, the largest being about 15 birds in North
Hartland
Turkey Vulture -- one seen by Ed along Putnam Road in Springfield
Bald Eagle -- an adult in Windsor
Red-tailed Hawk -- one in Springfield
Killdeer -- one by the floodplain area by Windsor Industrial Park
Red-bellied Woodpecker -- one in the floodplain area by Windsor
Industrial Park
Eastern Bluebird -- Lake Runnemede
American Robin -- a few in North Springfield
Northern Shrike -- one along the western part of Little Ascutney Road
in Weathersfield
Red-winged Blackbird - a few along Old Connecticut River Road in
Springfield
Common Grackle - one along Old Connecticut River Road in Springfield
Other species found in southeastern Windsor County today included
Hooded and Common Mergansers, Rock Pigeon, Mourning Dove, Downy,
Hairy, and Pileated Woodpeckers, Blue Jay, American Crow, Common
Raven, Black-capped Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, White-breasted
Nuthatch, European Starling, Northern Cardinal (numerous around Lake
Runnemede), American Tree Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, House Finch, and
House Sparrow.
