Newfound Lake in eastern Grafton County is still largely unfrozen (as of 1/26). On a recent visit I did not find a lot of birds, but there were some good ones, and a lot of potential! The lake can be difficult to access due to limited public parking and busy roads, but some viewpoints can be had along Rt. 3A to the east and along the West Shore and North Shore roads. On my recent visit there was a continuing group of Horned Grebes offshore from the intersection of Favor Rd and Rt. 3A. This species is rare in the county in January—if you go, try and get better photos than I was able to obtain! There were also Common Loons on the western shore. My hunch is that this lightly-birded lake gets a lot more than is reported. Especially as the rivers and smaller lakes freeze up.

There are several other eBird hotspots on and around Newfound Lake worth checking. The lake is busy in the warmer months, but not so much in January! For more information on hotspots, be sure and check out https://birdinghotspots.org/us/new-hampshire/grafton
