This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for June 4, 2007 covering the period May
28 - June 3, 2007.

 

            The highlights of this week were BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS seen at
Dead Creek's Brilyea Access (3 on 5/28, 1 on 6/2),   SEMI-PALMATED PLOVERS
(4 at Brilyea Access on 5/28, 3 at Brattleboro Retreat Meadows on 5/30 and
6/1) and YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS in Tinmouth Channel, Putney, Wells and
Lefferts Pond.

 

            A COMMON LOON in sub-adult plumage was spotted in Brattleboro on
6/3.

 

            Six RED-NECKED GREBES were observed on Shelburne Pond 5/29.

 

            GREAT EGRETS were seen at Henwood Hill Marsh (5/29) and Allen
Brothers Marsh (5/28) in Westminster, and at Muddy Brook Marsh in South
Burlington 5/30 and 6/1. 

 

            Three (a pair and one immature) late-departing SNOW GEESE were
sighted on Lake Carmi in Franklin on 5/29.  A BRANT was seen at Branch Pond
in Sunderland on 5/28.  At Brilyea Access two AMERICAN WIGEONS were spotted
on 5/31 and 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS on 6/2.  A RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was seen
in Brattleboro on 6/3.

 

            A pair of MERLINS was observed in Middlebury on 5/30,

 

            Ten LEAST SANDPIPERS were sighted at Brattleboro Retreat Meadows
on 6/1.

 

            Three WHIP-POOR-WILLS were heard in Hartland on 5/30. 

 

            A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen at Brilyea Access 5/31.

 

            On Stratton Mountain an aging BICKNELL'S THRUSH that was banded
as a yearling there in 1997 was mist-netted by VINS biology conservationists
on 5/31. 

 

            BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS were observed at the West Rutland Marsh (1
on 6/2) and in Windsor (1 on 6/2).

 

            Two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were seen southeast of the Southpoint
and Spear development in South Burlington on 5/28.

 

            An ORCHARD ORIOLE was spotted at McCuen Slang on 5/29 and in
Rutland on 6/2.
