This is New Hampshire Audubon’s Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, January 8th, 
2014.



2 DOVEKIES were seen off of Great Boar’s Head in Hampton on January 3rd.



A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER has been seen on several days visiting a birdfeeder 
in Alstead since about January 1st.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in Tilton on January 5th, and 1 was seen in 
Kingston on the 4th.



A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen along Route 93 in North Salem, and 1 was seen 
along Route 33 in Greenland, both on January 5th.



A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen from Cross Beach Road in Seabrook on January 5th, 
but has not been relocated.



SNOWY OWLS continued to be reported in New Hampshire during the past week 
including 1 along the coast in Rye, 3 in the Hampton and Seabrook marsh 
areas, and 2 seen from Short Road at the Pease International Tradeport.



A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen in Hampton Harbor on January 4th, and 5th.



An ICELAND GULL was seen in Hampton on January 4th.



A BLACK GUILLEMOT and 43 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen along the coast on 
January 4th.



4 LAPLAND LONGSPURS and 6 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at the Nashua Airport on 
January 4th.



A LAPLAND LONGSPUR and a flock of 61 HORNED LARKS were seen at Boggy Meadows 
Farm in Walpole on January 4th.



9 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen at Bicentennial Park, 2 were seen at Straw 
Point, and 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS and 40 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at Hampton 
Beach State Park, all on January 4th. 3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen at 
Ragged Neck in Rye on January 5th.



A MERLIN was seen from Island Path in Hampton on January 4th.



A GREAT CORMORANT was seen on the Merrimack River in Manchester on January 
5th.



2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and 10 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at a private residence in 
Pittsfield on January 1st.



A CAROLINA WREN was seen in Berlin on January 5th, and a RED-BELLIED 
WOODPECKER was seen in North Conway on the 4th, unusually far north 
locations for these birds in winter.



3 TURKEY VULTURES were seen in Exeter on January 4th.



A NORTHERN FLICKER was seen in Bedford on January 4th.



A flock of over 250 CEDAR WAXWINGS was seen in Hanover on January 2nd.



Highlights of the Sandwich Christmas Bird Count held on December 29th 
included: 2 BALD EAGLES, a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, a GREAT HORNED OWL, 2 BARRED 
OWLS, a BELTED KINGFISHER, a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, a CAROLINA WREN, and a 
BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD;
