This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, October 16th, 
2017.



A family of SANDHILL CRANES consisting of 2 adults and 1 juvenile continues 
to be seen along Plains Road in Monroe and was last reported on October 
14th. 2 SANDHILL CRANES were seen flying in Grafton near the Connecticut 
River on October 11th, and 1 was seen near Viels Farm stand in Strafford on 
the 9th.



A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen migrating over Bethlehem on October 12th, and 1 was 
seen migrating south along the coast on the 16th.



A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen migrating over Pack Monadnock in Peterborough 
on October 11th.



A BLACK VULTURE was seen in Westmoreland on October 14th, and a kettle of 27 
TURKEY VULTURES was seen flying over Exeter on the 14th.



A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was seen along the Boy Scout Trail at Odiorne Point 
State Park in Rye on October 12th, and 1 was seen at NH Audubon’s Dahl 
Sanctuary in Conway on October 13th and 14th.



An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on 
October 15th.



A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen at Pickering Ponds in Rochester on October 
12th, 1 was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on the 12th, and 1 was 
seen at Witch Island in Hampton on the 11th.



A NELSON’S SPARROW was seen at Woodmont Orchard in Hollis on October 15th, 1 
was seen at Pickering Ponds in Rochester on the 12th, and 20 were counted in 
Hampton Marsh on the 15th.



A WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was seen at Goss Farm in Rye on October 15th.



A DICKCISSEL was seen at Goss Farm in Rye on October 12th, and 1 was seen in 
Ashland on the 10th.



A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen at Woodmont Orchard in Hollis on October 12th.



A flock of 20 RED CROSSBILLS was seen along Route 26 in Cambridge near Maine 
on October 10th. 28 RED CROSSBILLS and several WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were 
seen at Trudeau Road in Bethlehem on the 12th. A RED CROSSBILL was reported 
from the summit of Pack Monadnock in Peterborough on the 11th.



A BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen off of Little Boar’s Head in North Hampton on 
October 14th.



A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen near the north end of Odiorne Point 
State Park in Rye on October 14th.



A COMMON TERN was seen on Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro on October 15th, 
and 2 were seen in Hampton Harbor on the 14th.



60 CORY’S SHEARWATERS and 7 GREAT SHEARWATERS were seen off of the coast at 
Hampton Beach State Park on October 14th.



Over 2,100 NORTHERN GANNETS were counted migrating south off the coast on 
October 15th.



An adult male EURASIAN WIGEON continues to be seen in the southeast part of 
Great Bay, and was last reported on October 13th.



A flock of 40 SNOW GEESE was seen migrating south over Lyme on October 16th.



Inland reports of SCOTERS during the past week included 63 BLACK SCOTERS and 
6 SURF SCOTERS on Cherry Pond in Jefferson on October 12th, and 4 BLACK 
SCOTERS and 1 WHITE-WINGED SCOTER on Squam Lake on the 12th.



A GREAT CORMORANT was seen at the Wilder Dam on the Connecticut River on 
October 13th, and 1 was reported from Lovell Lake in Sanbornville on the 
15th.



At least 1 RAZORBILL and 2 BLACK GUILLEMOTS were seen off the coast during 
the past week.



An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was seen flying near the Concord Airport on 
October 10th.



Over 100 AMERICAN PIPITS were counted at Woodmont Orchard in Hollis on 
October 12th.



A flock of 9 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS was seen at Dodge Pond in Lyman on October 
12th, and a few were reported from Carter Hill in Concord on the 14th.



A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was heard in Sandwich on October 12th.



RAPTOR migration is under way with migrating raptors being counted daily at 
the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough, and at the 
Carter Hill Observatory in Concord. Pack Monadnock has reported over 11,014 
raptors and Carter Hill has reported over 5,343 raptors, all since September 
1st. The majority of BROAD-WINGED HAWKS have already passed by, but there 
are still good numbers of AMERICAN KESTRELS, SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, COOPER’S 
HAWKS, RED-TAILED HAWKS, OSPREYS, and BALD EAGLES to be seen. Be sure to 
visit these New Hampshire Audubon staffed observatories this fall season to 
help out with the counts!
