This evening (September 1) between 6 and 6:40 pm, many dozens of nighthawks flew past the backyard here in Norwich village. Numbers were difficult to estimate as batches of birds moved alternately northward and southward. Quite possibly some birds seen going by in one direction were later seen going in the opposite direction. My count for the largest continual stream of birds headed in the same direction was 87 flying southward. Because the backyard is surrounded by tall trees, it's likely that many birds went past unseen. Whatever the actual number of birds in this vicinity, this was by far the most spectacular flight of nighthawks I've ever seen at this location.
