Late afternoon today while birding along Connecticut River Road in Hartford, VT, Ed Hack and I saw an adult Bald Eagle on its large nest in a tall white pine towards the northern end of Johnston Island in the Connecticut River. The nest location is in Lebanon, NH, and not too far from the big box stores along Route 12A. Another adult Bald Eagle, presumably its mate, was perched in pine trees on the Vermont side of the river southward from Johnstone Island downstream from the nest site. This nest has been under occasional observation for several weeks, and a pair of adults have been sighted nearby, but this was the first time that an eagle was seen on the nest itself rather than in the vicinity. We have not attempted to view the nest from the New Hampshire side so cannot specify a good viewing point off Route 12A.

It’s great to see the increase in number of nesting eagles in very recent years in the Upper Valley.

Also this afternoon, we saw an adult Red-tailed Hawk carrying nest material to the southwest of the southern end of Connecticut River Road in Hartford, VT. This is in an area where adult Red-tails have been frequently seen in recent weeks.
