Martin-
I see this quite often. They are hunting the small mammals that dine on the waste see under the feeder. Last year I had an owl sitting right ontop of my feeder! You might consider putting your sightings like this in Vermont eBird - http://ebird.org/content/vt/

Subject: Surprise at the feeder

Went out to fill my feeders in S. Strafford last night and was surprised
when a very large bird silently flew off into the night. Returned with a
flashlight and saw a barred owl sitting in a nearby pine. I've never
seen an owl at a feeder before. Perhaps it was snacking on the suet?
