This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for October 1, 2007 covering the period
September 17-30, 2007.

 

Highlights this week include the following sightings:  2 BLACK VULTURES at
Brattleboro Retreat Meadows, 9/30;  7 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS on 9/24 at
Grand Isle; LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS at Brilyea Access, Dead Creek WMA - 2 on
9/23, 1 on 9/28 and 1 on 9/29; 1 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE at Brilyea Access
9/23,9/24 and 9/29; 1 PARASITIC JAEGER on Grand Isle, 9/26; 1 LONG-TAILED
JAEGER at Charlotte Town Beach, 9/27; 1 JAEGER species off Grand Isle on
9/28;  2 RUDDY TURNSTONES at Dead Creek in Highgate on 9/29 and an adult
NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW at Brilyea Access on 9/30 (directions:  hike
track through woods west of the first parking lot. About 200 yards past the
woods, go left onto path through goldenrod.  At end of path, turn right --
the sparrow was about 30 yards to the right.) and a second NELSON'S
SHARP-TAILED SPARROW at Brattleboro Retreat Meadows on 10/1.

 

Shorebirds sighted as recently as 9/29 at Dead Creek WMA as well as Dead
Creek in Highgate include BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS,
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and
DUNLINS.

 

Lingering GREAT EGRETS were spotted at Dead Creek WMA (2 on 9/29) and the
Winooski River (1 on 9/28) as well as CATTLE EGRETS (2 on 9/27 at Shelburne
Bay).  

            

Approximately 2,000 BONAPARTE'S GULLS were spotted from Grand Isle on 9/27.

 

A late-departing INDIGO BUNTING was seen at Brattleboro Retreat Meadows on
9/30.
