This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, December 22nd, 
2014.



A SMITH’S LONGSPUR was seen near the junction of Route 113 and Bearcamp Pond 
Road in North Sandwich on December 18th, but has not been relocated.



A SNOWY OWL was reportedly seen hunting in fields along River Road in 
Plainfield on December 18th.



2 SNOWY OWLS were seen in the vicinity of the Manchester airport on December 
15th, and at least 1 was still present on the 17th, and 18th. The best place 
to look for the owls is in the parking area of the Aviation Museum located 
on the east side of the airport on Navigator Road, or at the circle off 
Delta Drive near Harvey Road. Do not park on the perimeter road on the edge 
of the airport, or security will ask you to leave. An AMERICAN KESTREL was 
seen at the Manchester Airport on December 19th.



A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Sunapee on December 20th.



A male EURASIAN WIGEON was seen on Great Bay in Greenland on December 15th.



2 SNOW GEESE were seen flying up the Connecticut River near Hanover on 
December 18th.



A NORTHERN SHOVELER and 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS were seen in Derry on December 
18th.



2 male BLACK SCOTERS and a HORNED GREBE were seen on Lake Sunapee from 
Sunapee State Beach in Newbury on December 22nd.



A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen on Lake Winnipesaukee from Lake Shore Park in 
Gilford on December 16th, and 1 was seen on the Connecticut River near West 
Lebanon on the 19th.



An ICELAND GULL was seen at the Madbury Gravel Pit and one was seen at the 
Trails at Pickering Ponds in Rochester, both on December 16th.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in Lancaster on December 15th.



6 PINE GROSBEAKS were seen on Base Station Road in Crawford’s Purchase in 
Crawford Notch on December 20th.



An EVENING GROSBEAK was seen at a birdfeeder in New London on December 21st.



22 COMMON REDPOLLS, and 9 EVENING GROSBEAKS were reported from a private 
residence in Jefferson on December 20th.



A single COMMON REDPOLL was seen with a flock of 80 PINE SISKINS along River 
Road in Walpole on December 22nd.



A single COMMON REDPOLL was seen with a flock of 50 PINE SISKINS in 
Ellsworth on December 18th.



A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen in Derry on December 19th.



A HERMIT THRUSH was seen in Lee on December 20th, and 1 was seen in Durham 
on the 22nd.



A murder of over 800 AMERICAN CROWS was seen in Lebanon on December 13th.



A flock of over 100 AMERICAN ROBINS was seen foraging in ornamental fruit 
trees at the Cheshire Medical Center in Keene on December 21st.



Highlights of the Concord Christmas Bird Count, held on December 14th, 
included: a BUFFLEHEAD, a GADWALL, a WOOD DUCK, 3 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 2 
PEREGRINE FALCONS, a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, an EASTERN SCREECH-OWL, a 
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 11 HORNED LARKS, 3 HERMIT THRUSHES, a RUBY-CROWNED 
KINGLET, a WINTER WREN, 4 CHIPPING SPARROWS, a SWAMP SPARROW, a FOX SPARROW, 
a SAVANNAH SPARROW, and 2 SNOW BUNTINGS



Highlights of the Keene Christmas Bird Count, held on December 14th, 
included: a GRAY CATBIRD, a MERLIN, a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, 2 RED 
CROSSBILLS, 2 HERMIT THRUSHES, 2 WINTER WRENS, a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 7 
BARRED OWLS, 2 NORTHERN FLICKERS, 6 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, 2 COMMON 
REDPOLLS, 4 GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 20 EVENING GROSBEAKS, and 38 PINE 
SISKINS.



Highlights of the Coastal Christmas Bird Count, held on December 20th, 
included: 5 RAZORBILLS, 16 PURPLE SANDIPERS, a PINE WARBLER, 21 HOODED 
MERGANSERS, an AMERICAN COOT, 3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, a LAPLAND 
LONGSPUR, 2 GREEN-WINGED TEALS, 7 PURPLE FINCHES, a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, 2 
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 3 GRAY CATBIRDS, a PALM WARBLER, 2 EURASIAN WIGEONS, 10 
PINE SISKINS, 9 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 3 COMMON REDPOLLS, 3 ICELAND GULLS, a 
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, an EASTERN TOWHEE, an AMERICAN PIPIT, 6 GADWALLS, a 
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, a BLACK-HEADED GULL, a KING EIDER, a RUDDY DUCK, 4 
SNOWY OWLS, 8 EASTERN SCREECH-OWLS, 6 NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS, 4 GREAT HORNED 
OWLS, a BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD, 2 PINE GROSBEAKS, and a MARSH WREN



Highlights of the Lee/Durham Christmas Bird Count, held on December 21st, 
included: 3 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS, a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL, 
2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED 
GULLS, a GLAUCOUS GULL, a NELSON'S GULL, 9 ICELAND GULLS, 3 GRAY CATBIRDS, 2 
RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, a PINE WARBLER, 2 CHIPPING SPARROWS, and a PINE GROSBEAK.



The GYRFALCON that was seen in Madbury two-weeks ago has not been relocated 
during the past week, but may still be in the area.

Bird Count! Counts are scheduled for December 13, 2014 through January 1, 
2015. Those interested in participating in this fun winter activity will
