When the mudflats are exposed at the outflow of Jacob's Brook into the Connecticut at Orford, the potential for waders is possible during migration. Alas, the water is usually too high. Yesterday, on my way home, I noticed the water level was quite low exposing extensive mudflats. I scoured the area for waders finding only a Great Blue Heron. This morning, on my way to work, the water level was on its way back up, but some flats were still exposed. Happily, there was a lone Sanderling there, my first in Grafton County, and, according to eBird records, only the second ever seen here. The only other record for the county comes from Wellington SP in Bristol dating from 8/30/2015.
In the Upper Valley area on the Vermont side of the river, there are sightings of single a Sanderling on 9/28/2000 in Norwich, 3 on 8/28/2011 at the Ompompanoosuc River Flats just north of Norwich, and singles on 8/28/2011 at the Ledyard Bridge (also Norwich) from the Vermont side, and on the 8/29/2011 at the Wilder picnic area.
There are 4 photos posted with the ebird list at: https://ebird.org/checklist/S149709203.
