Isn't there a simplistic solution here? Since you don't care what the 'any letter' is, or want to alter it, why not leave it out of the equation?
Do a find-replace search for 'space-full stop' and replace it with a 'full stop'.
That has always been part of my standard MS editing macro together with a similar solution for typists who insist on a space before question and exclamation marks and double spaces between sentences.
