It is not necessary to have any application open. NWP just sends a message (Apple Event?) to the Finder saying "Open this file or folder". Finder takes over and opens the file just as if you would have double clicked on it in the Finder. You could also select the Excel application icon (or any other application icon you have on your drive) and then paste the link into NWP. One click on the link in NWP would then open Excel.

Where was the file located when you copied it? Was it on a CD/DVD or on an external drive? If yes, then the Finder can not find it because it has been removed. If the drive is still connected, or the file is on your internal disk, then Finder should find it, and clicking the link in NWP should work.

With "default application" I was actually referring to what you see in the pop-up menu "Open with" when you select a file in Finder and then execute the 'Get Info' menu command.

Not sure what you mean here, because that’s how it already is. In case you mean the opposite ('Paste' having COM+SHIFT+V and 'Paste Text Only' having COM+V), then that shouldn’t be a problem. You can assign (almost) any shortcut you like by going to Preferences > Menu Keys.

What problem?

You don’t need to do that in NWP.

Now you make me curious. What is it that OpenOffice can do and NWP can not do?
