I don't know how those apps behave when /Users/Shared does not exist.

Have you ever tried Vuescan? This application provides almost total coverage of the know scanner world. I mention this in case you ever have problems sometime.

I cannot agree more. HP charges like wounded bulls.

Last December, when I finally bit the bullet and trashed my expensive HP Color Laser printer [because of $900+ cost to try to repair plus 4*AU$110 CMYK cartridges when needed], I bought a top-quality Epson TX710W all-in-one PSC [AU$200 app.] and replaced its six print cartridges with a six-pack CISS set [Continuous Ink Supply System.] Cost, about AU$143. Within the next month or so I expect I will need to refill ONLY the black bottle - about 100 mL in each for approx. $30. I've probably saved the cost of the printer already (-:

Of course the resultant print is not quite as good as a laser printer, but it's not far behind. And Apple automatically updates the drivers too.
