As others already have mentioned you can use the 'Character Viewer'. -
Just enable it in the 'System Preferences' -> 'International', select
the pane 'Keyboard Menu' (think it's called so in English' and put a
mark into 'Keyboard Viewer' and/or 'Character Palette'.

When this is done, you can always use 'special Characters' from the
'Edit' menu. This window is floating and can be placed anywhere on the
screen. To use it easiest just set the blinking mark where you want the
sign and then find the needed sign in the palette window, mark it and
choose 'Insert' - or as I prefer - just double-click on the
sign/character and it'll be put right after the blinking mark.

If I need a more enhanced feature I use 'Popchar X' (shareware) which
enables a dropdown menu as a 'P'. From this you can choose any available
character in any enabled font and just insert it at the blinking mark by
a double-click

Latest version is ver. 5.3...
