Thank you very much for your two macros! I tried the two, and they worked like a charm.

In fact, I first tried your first macro, and it worked just as I wanted; but I noticed that as the original main text had:

aaaaaa (1) bbbbb (2) ccccc (3), etc.

the result document had an unneeded space before each note reference. -- Then I tried the second macro you sent me, modifying just the find regex from:

$note_Refs = $main_doc.text.find '\(\d+\)', 'Ea'

to:

$note_Refs = $main_doc.text.find ' *\(\d+\)', 'Ea'

And I got the footnotes just as I wanted.
